At 9.25pm 23rd August, the Dorset Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to smoke inside a property in Castletown on Portland.  Because it was unclear whether or not all the occupants were outside, the incident was treated as “persons reported” and three fire appliances were mobilised – two from Portland and one from Weymouth.  Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property and found that there had been a fire in the foyer area of the building which had been extinguished prior to the Service’s arrival.  An adult female was treated on scene by Ambulance personnel for smoke inhalation and the Police attended as the fire is thought to have been started deliberately.
